Glossary

Coach Desk terms

Words used in this app. New features add a term here so volunteer coaches can look it up.

App

  • Clip Board

Home dashboard: team record, contacts, calendar, and shortcuts into the rest of Coach Desk.

  • Offense Builder

Where you build offensive formations and plays, then star the ones that belong in the official playbook.

  • Defense Builder

Where you build defensive schemes, coverage, keys, and stunts.

  • Playbook

Official book of starred formations, plays, schemes, stunts, and special teams. Check Game day to pack a PDF.

  • Official / Star

Solid green star = on the official playbook. Outline star = not official yet. Tap to add or remove.

  • Game day

Checkbox on a playbook tile. Checked items go into the Offense / Defense / ST PDF pack.

  • Library

Safety manuals, policies, lists, documents, videos, sample plays/looks, and this glossary.

  • Sample Plays / Looks

Starter templates in the Library. Add a copy to your builder; the sample stays in the library.

  • Import Offensive Playbook

Upload a photo or PDF of a play sheet. Coach Desk scans alignment and auto-builds the offensive play and a matching defensive scheme, then stars both.

  • Import Defensive Schemes

Same scan as the offensive import: the sheet becomes a defensive scheme plus the offensive play on the other side of the ball.

  • New Play

Creates a new offensive play in the playbook builder.

  • New Defensive Scheme

Creates a new defensive look (front + coverage) you can diagram.

  • Flip

Turns the field diagram so offense is at the top or the bottom.

  • Fit

Resets the field zoom so the whole diagram fits on screen.

  • Lock

Locks the diagram you are viewing — the base look, a stunt, or a play — so tokens and arrows cannot move until you unlock that item.

  • Undo / Redo / Reset

Undo last edit on the open look, redo it, or reset the look back to its original template.

Team

  • Roster Contacts

Players, coaches, parents/guardians, and other contacts with cards, photos, and export.

  • Parent / Guardian (P/G)

Up to two adult contacts per player. Empty P/G rows stay off the contact list and export.

  • Coaching Card

Coach profile with credentials and the required-before-coaching checklist (CPR, first aid, trainings).

  • Player Card

Player summary: name, number, position, DOB, contacts, assignment notes. Grade is not used.

  • Depth Charts

Who starts at each position, with extra depth teams you can rename (1s, 2s, 3s…).

  • Assessments

Pre-season skill tests (times and ranks) used to help place players.

  • Virtual Practice

Videos and quizzes coaches assign so players learn alignments, stances, assignments, and techniques.

  • Ruleset

11-man, 8-man, or 7-on-7. Changes which formations, plays, and looks are available.

Offense

  • Formation

How the 11 (or 8) offensive players line up before the snap — I-Form, Spread, Wing, etc.

  • Play

A named call from a formation: huddle words, jobs, blocking, routes, and the ball carrier.

  • Huddle call

What the kids hear. Short, loud, same every time (example: Base I — Power Right).

  • Personnel

How many backs and tight ends are in the game (21 = two backs, one TE).

  • Hole numbers

Run-play landmarks through the offensive line. Even holes to the right of center, odd to the left (0 is the center).

  • Power / Power side

Downhill gap scheme. Power side is the direction the extra blocker and ball are going.

  • Zone

Offensive run where linemen step together and block an area instead of a man.

  • Pull

A lineman leaves his spot, loops behind the line (dotted path from his rear), and leads the play.

  • Block T

Blocking path that ends in a T, not an arrow tip — that player is sealing / blocking off, not running a route.

  • Ball carrier arrow

Thin red dotted arrow showing who has the ball and where they are going.

  • Route tree

Classic pass routes (hitch, slant, out, curl, post, go, screen). Pick from the tree, then nudge.

  • Eligible receiver

A back or end who can catch a pass. The play maker lets you pick one and assign a route.

  • Scout defense

The defensive look you draw the play against so kids see their keys and blocking.

  • QB / RB / FB / WR / TE

Quarterback, running back, fullback, wide receiver, tight end.

  • C / OG / OT

Center, offensive guard, offensive tackle. Center is the square token.

Defense

  • Scheme / Look

A named defensive alignment plus coverage (example: Base 4-4 — Cover 3).

  • Front

How many down linemen and linebackers: 4-4, 4-3, 5-3, 6-2, 8-man fronts, etc.

  • Alignment

Where a defender stands relative to the offensive line (head-up, inside shade, outside shade).

  • Stance

How the player is set: 2-point, 3-point, 4-point, sprinter, upright read.

  • Technique (DL)

Number that says which shoulder of which offensive lineman you line up on. 0 is on the center; 1–3 on guards; 4–5 on tackles; 6–9 on the tight end / wide.

  • 0-tech

    Head-up on the center.

  • 1-tech

Inside shade of the guard (next to the center).

  • 2-tech

    Head-up on the guard.

  • 3-tech

Outside shade of the guard (toward the tackle).

  • 4-tech / 4i

4 is head-up on the tackle. 4i is the inside shoulder of the tackle.

  • 5-tech

    Outside shoulder of the tackle.

  • 6 / 7 / 9-tech

On or outside the tight end. 9 (and Wide-9) is the widest.

  • Gap

The hole between offensive linemen a defender is responsible for. A is either side of the center, then B, C, D going out.

  • A gap

    Between center and guard.

  • B gap

    Between guard and tackle.

  • C gap

Outside the tackle (or between tackle and tight end).

  • D gap

    Outside the tight end.

  • Assignment

The job on this play or look: gap, contain, drop, spy, KEY, etc.

  • KEY

The offensive player a defender reads first (guard, tackle, back, receiver). Drawn as a thin yellow dotted line.

  • Set KEY

Select a linebacker or DB, tap Set KEY, then tap the offensive player they read.

  • Man coverage

Secondary matches a receiver. KEY / matchup lines show who they have.

  • Zone coverage

Secondary drops to an area (deep third, half, or quarter) instead of following one man.

  • Cover 2 / C2

Two deep safeties; corners play the flats.

  • Cover 3 / C3

Three deep (two corners + a safety); four underneath.

  • Cover 4 / C4

Four deep (quarters). Each deep defender owns a fourth of the field.

  • LB drops

Linebacker pass-zone ovals you can drag and color. Hidden when LBs are in run fit.

  • Run fit

Linebackers play the run first; drop ovals stay off.

  • Stunt

A called twist or loop off a base look. Saved per look; toggle the checkbox to show the stunt over the base.

  • Contain / Set the edge

Do not let the ball bounce outside you. Spill it back inside to help.

  • Spill

Knock the ball carrier back inside instead of trying to tackle him outside.

  • Force

Make the ball bounce to the sideline or to the next defender’s gap.

  • Blitz

A defender who is not a down lineman rushes the passer.

  • Spy

A defender assigned to the quarterback on scrambles.

  • Robber

A safety or backer who sits in a throwing lane underneath a deep zone.

  • DE / DT / NG

Defensive end, defensive tackle, nose guard.

  • LB / MLB / OLB

    Linebacker, middle linebacker, outside linebacker.

  • CB / S

Cornerback and safety — the secondary.

Special teams

  • Special Teams

Kickoff, punt, return, extra point, and field-goal units and looks.

  • LS (Long snapper)

Snaps for punts and kicks. Shown as a square token like the center.

  • H (Holder)

Kneels to take the snap on a place kick.

  • GUN

Gunner — the wide coverage player on punt.

  • KR / PR

    Kick returner / punt returner.

Field

  • LOS (Line of scrimmage)

The white line the ball is on. Offense on one side, defense on the other.

  • Token

A player icon on the diagram. Defense = triangle, offense = circle, center / long snapper = square.

  • Arrow (defense)

Assignment path from a defender. Tip moves the line; middle dot deletes it; tip click cycles solid (green) / dashed (yellow) / dotted (white).

  • Zone oval

A coverage drop area. Faint until selected; drag to size. Does not belong on offensive play drawings.

  • Scout team

The offense (or defense) shown on the other side of the LOS so you can teach a look versus a real formation.

  • Marks

Extra arrows and zones you add from the field menu (Add arrow, Add zone).

Practice

  • Practice Plan

The day’s script: location, times, warm-ups, stations, coaches, and a PDF you can hand out.

  • Warm-ups

Stretch and movement list that runs at the start of practice. Can carry a URL or uploaded file.

  • Station

A timed block on the practice (O-line, defense, 7-on-7…). Color-coded on the timeline.

  • Drill

A named exercise inside a station, with optional video or diagram.

  • Assigned planner

The coach who owns that day’s practice plan.

  • Repeat task

Copy a practice job every week or every two weeks through an end date.

  • Practice location / Field

The site (with address) and the Field inside it (Field 1, Field 2…).

Game day

  • Calendar

Practices, games, and events. Next event also shows on the Clip Board.

  • Stats

Simple play-by-play: ball carrier, yards, penalties, downs. Can be assigned to a volunteer.

  • Play logger

Tap the result of a play instead of writing a full stat sheet.

  • Us vs them

Season points for your team and opponents, shown on the Clip Board.
